On Thursday, February 13th, 2025, C2 Humanities class students attended a lesson at the Museum of Modern Greek Culture in Monastiraki!
As part of the interdisciplinary teaching of the subjects Modern Greek Language, Contemporary History and English Language, the Museum was selected as the site for experiential teaching of these subjects, as well as for familiarizing students with the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage and its role in shaping individual identity. In this way, the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage was integrated into the learning process, both as a social anthropology concept and in terms of methodology.
The students were guided by the Head of Collections at the Museum, ethnologist-folklorist Mrs. Panagiota Andrianopoulou, through the thematic unit "Who are we, who are you?" which addresses culture through exhibits of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, focusing on the historical elements that form identity, place, and time.
The learning objectives set for History and Modern Greek Language included: the development of expression and creative writing skills, the ability to understand and analyze historical and cultural elements, an understanding of the significance of cultural heritage in language and tradition, and the use of sources and exhibits to enhance critical thinking and analysis skills. The learning objectives set for English language included: providing an experiential context to empower the development of global active citizenship, forming identity in globalized societies, and enhancing students' intercultural competence.
The excellent guided tour addressed all the learning objectives set by the two teachers who also accompanied the students, namely Ms. Andromachi Siampani (Greek Language & History teacher) and Ms. Katerina Christodoulou (English Language teacher), who designed and coordinated the pilot educational activity.
